LEWIS O'CONNOR

President

Hi I'm Lewis, the president of Healthcare Students Against Racism this year. I'm mixed race - half Scottish half Pakistani/Indian and I'm entering my intercal year in pharmacology. I set up this society after being inspired by the BLM movement; it reminded me that racism is still rife within society and something needs to be done about it. I believe together as students we can support one another to make meaningful change at the school and bring about lasting racial equality.

KASIA FRANCZAK

Vice President

I'm Kasia, Vice President for Healthcare Students Against Racism this year. I'm heading into 4th year medicine, and my ethnicity is Anglo-Indian and Polish. Fun fact: I've decided to take up the recorder again during lockdown, I would like to thank my family for their continued patience x

Name: Keziah Lewis!
Year: 4 going into 5 of Medicine.
Ethnicity: White British.
Fun Fact: One of my first jobs was dressing up a giant Lego brick for "Green Brick's Birthday Show" at Legoland!

RAKSHA NAIK

Treasurer

Hi! I'm Raksha (she/her) and I'm going into 4th year of Medicine. I'm a Saudi-born Indian who moved to Glasgow when I was about 6. I've been compared to a hobbit because I have a love for adventure (totally not because of my height or anything) and I'm looking forward to helping make change for racial equality!

Hi everyone! My name’s Shaifali and I’ll be going into 4th year of Medicine. I was born in India but have lived in different countries since then. Fun fact - I can speak 4 languages and am trying to get it up to 5 (does Glaswegian count?)

NORAH ALHAMED

Welfare Portfolio Lead

Hi, I’m Norah and I’ll be starting 4th year Medicine in September! My ethnicity is Arab. I was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Manchester when I was 10 years old, and then to Glasgow to start uni! When I’m not in the hospital/library, I’m watching ‘Friends’ for the 13th time (I wish I was exaggerating) - aaaaand not to brag but I know all of Phoebe Buffet’s songs off by heart (no big deal) so if you ever see me around, let’s duet smelly cat. I look forward to joining this society - I fully support this cause and look forward to doing as much as I can, however small.

AYESHA CHEEMA

Medical School Representative

Hiya I'm Ayesha. I'm Pakistani but grew up in Scotland. I believe that providing teaching on racism in education programmes is key in dealing with the wider systemic problem of racism in this country. That's why I'm very excited to work with the committee, staff and students to try see a change in the medical curriculum. I've just finished my Intercal in International Health in Leeds and am going back to Glasgow for 4th year Medicine. A fun fact about me is i can balance 3 oranges on my head.

JESS JACKSON

Public Relations Coordinator

Hey, I’m Jackson. I’m the Public Relations Coordinator this year. I’ll be going into Second year in Medicine. I’m mixed race Ghanian and English. My fun fact is that I’m currently trying to teach myself German, so if you speak German come find me in the Wolfson (and please don’t cringe at my German accent). I hope that this year I’ll get to hear your opinions on how we can improve racial equality in the Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing Schools so we can make a difference!
